These are the key mobility trends for employers

Green mobility is more important than ever. This can be seen from Acerta’s ninth annual mobility barometer. The number of employees who are cycling to work has increased by 35% in the last five years. Do you want to know more about mobility trends? We will list them below.

The bicycle is gaining in popularity

Over the last five years, the number of employees who are cycling to and from work has increased by as much as 35%. This makes cycling the winner when it comes to modes of transport. Whether an employee cycles to work often depends on the distance to his place of work, but, oddly enough, even people who live further away often choose to cycle to work. Many employees combine cycling with going by car (24.3%). For example, they cycle when the weather is fine and go by car when the weather is bad.

As an employer, you can add bicycle leasing to your cafeteria plan. In this way, you can encourage your employees to cycle to work more often. In particular, electric bikes make a big difference: employees see the distance as being shorter and so are more likely to go by bike. To sum up, your smart cycling initiatives will not only make cycling seem more attractive to your employees, but you will also be contributing to healthier and more sustainable commuting. This is a win-win situation for everyone.

Although cycling is steadily increasing in popularity, driving continues to be the most widely used means of transport for many employees. More than a half (52.3%) still travel to and from work by car every day. However, mobility is in a state of constant flux. Factors such as a bus stop in the neighbourhood, a direct travel link or the frequency of trains during rush hour play a major role in choosing public transport.

Employees often combine different modes of transport and make conscious decisions based on convenience, speed and accessibility. As an employer, you can respond to this by offering flexible mobility options such as mobility budgets, bicycle leasing and subscriptions to public transport. In this way, you will not only be helping your employees to make smarter travel decisions, but you will also be helping them to work in a more sustainable and efficient way.

Why employees prefer to be in the driving seat themselves

Public transport lags far behind when it comes to commuting. Only 5.5% of commuters choose to travel by train, tram or bus rather than other means of transport, while 2.9% combine these forms of transport with a bicycle or a car. Thus, public transport accounts for 8% of the market, which is significantly less than cars and bicycles.

Those who travel by public transport have little control over travel time and options. Employees prefer to choose their own means of transport such as a car or a bicycle so they have more control and flexibility. Only in areas where the use of a car is discouraged, for example in Brussels, is public transport gaining ground.
